Welcome to the web site of the Eastham Forum

President's Message

Many things are happening in Eastham and we have many things to consider, evaluate, and act on—a new library, traffic control in North Eastham, and sobering gasoline prices—to name a few. But the assets that make Eastham a popular place on the map are our beaches. Perhaps we are just awakening to the need for a serious discussion about responsible stewardship of these assets.

We hope that members of the Eastham Forum, like you, your neighbors, and other Eastham residents will join in this discussion at the annual meeting of the Eastham Forum. It will take place at the Eastham Town Hall on Wednesday, October 22, beginning at 7 p.m.

Loretta Neilsen has done a splendid job in organizing and preparing for this meeting. Many of you have thoughts about what ought to happen, but time is not on our side for this discussion. Please invite your neighbors and friends to this meeting so that we can all be better informed. We are fortunate to have very able resource people who will lead this discussion.

What Is Happening to Our Bay Beaches?

A Topic for Discussion

Annual Meeting of The Eastham Forum

October 22, 7 p.m.

Earle Mountain Room, Town Hall

Our bay beaches are the single most valuable natural resource that our Town possesses. These beaches are critical not only to our quality of life but to the Town's economy as well. There are serious questions we need to address. They include access to our beaches, erosion, and disappearing dunes.

Bay beaches are tied economically to motels, hotels, seasonal rentals, restaurants, retail outlets, and healthy real estate values that affect every taxpayer. Taxes on valuable bay-side real estate help to offset real estate taxes for all those who do not live along the edge of the sea.

What must we do to protect and maintain these beaches? Our guest speaker, Robert Hamilton, Jr., Senior Civil/Coastal Engineer from the Woods Hole Group. will address this question. He will use a Power-Point presentation to focus on the erosion and possible renourishment of the beaches. He will be assisted by Senior Scientist Dr. Lee Weishar.

The Woods Hole Group is a coastal sciences and engineering company with extensive experience in analysis and evaluation, biological and geographical studies, and the design and permitting of beach restoration efforts. They have been involved with many Cape Cod towns in addressing various coastal needs, including dredging, beach nourishment, wetland resource restoration, etc. They have worked with the towns of Chatham, Orleans, Wellfleet, Brewster, and others.

We are losing valuable time every day that we wait to take remedial action on this vital issue.

PLEASE INVITE YOUR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS TO JOIN YOU IN ATTENDING THIS IMPORTANT PRESENTATION!

Loretta Neilsen
