Keeping Summer Beaches Clean

Robert Gardner

At the annual meeting, Bruce Whitmore read a report from Georgia Hawko who heads the beach cleanup committee. Georgia thanked the Forum for donating 30 beautiful T-shirts to the 25 volunteers who cleaned 8 Eastham bay beaches every week last summer. These volunteers wore gloves supplied by Gary Crumb of Ace Hardware and the Forum T-shirts inscribed with the words, "Leave nothing on the beach but our footprints."

Bill Boyd, a beach cleanup volunteer, finds the work very meaningful. Bill and his wife, together with several others, police the beach from Campground to Thumpertown. Bill wrote, "While most of the team is spread from the bank to the bay picking up papers, bottles, cans, and other trash, I walk along the water's edge. With the sun coming from the east, any broken glass shines very clearly allowing me to remove large quantities from the sand. I find it very satisfying to think of children running barefoot along the beach not having to worry about stepping on broken glass.

The Forum Board thanks Georgia, Bill, and all the volunteers who keep Eastham's bay beaches so clean. The board also thanks Vida and Dan DeMale and the many volunteers who plant and nurture the Eastham Forum Flower Islands (EFFIs) that so greatly enhance the beauty of Eastham.
